Peyronie’s Disease is the name given to a condition in males that causes a bend or curvature in the penis during an erection. In some cases, the condition is mild, in others if can be so severe and painful as to prevent intercourse.
This condition that can affect males at any age. The actual causes are unknown. It is often attributed to injury to the penis from some external cause, but it can also occur spontaneously – with no obvious cause.
The curvature is caused by “plaque” or hardened tissue that forms in the tough outer lining of the penis. This is a sheath-like tissue under the skin. When an erection occurs, the soft, expandable tissue of the penis begins to fill with blood and the internal pressure – which can be well above normal blood pressure – creating the erection.
